A Historic Dining Room with Estuary Views

The Hotel Portmeirion was opened by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis on the 2nd of April 1926. In 1930, he added the curvilinear dining room, describing it as follows:

“The walls are of grey French walnut and the floor of light polished oak. Ceiling blush rose with green cornice, curtains jade and windows primrose.”

In 2005, the Dining Room and Bar were re-designed by Sir Terence Conran in an art deco style. The Dining Room has majestic, breathtaking views over the Dwyryd Estuary, with tableware designed by Sophie Conran for Portmeirion.

An oil painting hangs proudly over the restaurant: a late 1940s portrait of Jim Wylie, Portmeirion’s first Hotel Manager, sitting in the Hotel Dining Room. It was painted by Edward Wolfe R.A.

Modern-Welsh Cuisine

Portmeirion’s Executive Head Chef Mark Threadgill and his talented team of Hotel Chefs, under the supervision of Head Chef Daniel Griffiths, use the finest local ingredients, including some foraged from right here in the village.

Together, they create a unique style of Modern-Welsh cuisine, combining traditional French techniques with Japanese flavours. The menu changes regularly, allowing the chefs to utilise the freshest seasonal produce.

The Dining Room has retained two AA Rosettes for a number of years and is open for resident breakfast services, pre-booked two or three course lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.
